Girl Held Captive as Sex Slave for 18 Years

Young Jaycee Dugard

Young Jaycee Dugard

You can’t make this stuff up.

Eighteen years ago, Philip Garrido & his wife, Nancy Garrido, abducted then 11-year old Jaycee Dugard from a bus stop in South Lake Tahoe, Nevada. The Garridos brought Jaycee Dugard back to their house in Antioch, CA, where she was kept in a makeshift backyard compound, repeatedly raped, & forced to bear two children with Phillip Garrido, the first of which she had when she was only 14 years old.

As details about this bizarre story surface in the media, it’s all I can do to shake off my disbelief.

From what I can tell, Phil Garrido is your classic predatory rapist. He had a long and well documented history of sexualized violenceagainst girls and young women. Ninteen years before Jaycee Dugard, he picked up a 14-year old girl from a public library, drugged her, took her to a motel, and raped her for two days. The criminal case against him never moved forward because, like many rape survivors too traumatized by what happened, the girl refused to testify. Four years later, Phil Garrido kidnapped another woman, Katherine Hall, and raped her for eight hours in an empty warehouse before a police officer stumbled upon them.

For the rape of Katherine Hall he was sentenced to 50 years to life, but was released after just a dozen.

There is so much wrong with this story, I don’t even know where to begin.

Why on earth would you let out on parole a man who committed a violent act of rape? This wasn’t a well-meaning boyfriend who couldn’t see the lines of consent – this was the work of a psychopath. If they don’t put Garrido away for the rest of his life for what he’s taken away from Jaycee Dugard, he will do it again to another girl. Almost 80% of predatory sex offenders will re-offend if given the opportunity. Lesson learned: once a rapist, always a rapist.

Why did it take officials 18 years to find Jaycee Dugard? She was an FBI priority for many years, and Phil Garrido was surrounded by cops. His neighbors, who used to refer to him as “Creepy Phil” called the police to his house countless times. Garrido also had a parole officer who visited twice a month. How did the cops that were dispatched to his house and the parole officer miss the enormous compound in the Garrido’s backyard where Jaycee Dugard & her two kids lived? Look up his address on Google maps. You can see everything on the aerial view.

What a complete failure of the criminal justice system that the sex offender rap can hang on a minor offender like a dead weight, but does nothing to prevent creeps like Phil Garrido from capturing himself a 11-year old sex slave.

And Nancy Garrido!?! WTF. Don’t know what else to say.

Jaycee Dugard is 29 years old. Poor girl missed out on pretty much her entire childhood. She never got to finish middle school. She probably never had a first date, a first kiss, or a real boyfriend. She never got to read any of my favorite books, or figure out what were her favorite books. She never went to college. It makes me really sad to think about all the experiences she didn’t get to have, and the experience she will never get to have. I  mean, is she going to date? Will she ever have sex that doesn’t make her think of what she went through?

I don’t know how to understand what happened to Jaycee Dugard, and I’m really appalled that I live within a community where something like this could happen to somebody.

News articles are so scandalous these days because everyone’s trying to grab readers. Did you read any of the articles about Mike Duvall, the CA Assemblyman who was caught on tape bragging about his affairs? The papers printed everything he said, all the nasty details. Stuff I didn’t even know you could print in the paper, was printed.

With Torrent Magazine, I’m already doing things I wouldn’t necessarily do if I wasn’t interested in attracting readers.

very tragic indeed and it’s great that she has been found.

i can’t help but mention this even though it’s tired: that the media only cares so much about little blond girls who are kidnapped or missing, when how many more girls and women of color are the victim of violent crime and/or violent sex crime all the time?

granted this is a case of a found girl, not a missing one.

also… why doesn’t Torrent magazine mention Annie Le? i shivered when i read about her yesterday.

That’s not your only response, though, right? Because no matter who this happened to, it was really, really terrible. He had her for EIGHTEEN YEARS. I can’t even imagine that.

Annie Le hasn’t made an appearance because we don’t post in real time. Sorry 😦 Jaycee Dugard waited two weeks for her post to go up. I suspect Annie Le will have to wait, as well.

Read on Washington Post today that they found a body they suspect to be hers. My gripe (which will be forthcoming in the form of said post) w/coverage about girls disappearing is that there’s always an undercurrent – a certain tone to the piece – that will suggest, openly or not, that we women have to “watch out,” like it’s a woman’s responsibility to not be nabbed by some fucking sociopath.

People are responsible for their own actions. Thereby, when a woman gets killed/hurt/raped, there can only be ONE PERSON RESPONSIBLE. And that would be the person who killed/hurt/raped her.

all true. i think my true bone to pick is with media outlets such as and their way of reporting crimes against women, like it’s a trashy reality show or contest to make everything as scandalous as possible. From a front page story on August 24th, 2009:

“The nude body of Jenkins’ wife, former swimsuit model Jasmine Fiore, was found last weekend in Orange County, California….Fiore’s body was found last Saturday in a Dumpster behind an apartment complex in Buena Park, just outside Anaheim, California….Law enforcement sources have told CNN that Fiore was identified through the serial numbers on her breast implants.”

but i agree that Jaycee’s story is completely appalling. i don’t even know how someone would recover from that, and i hope she has some sort of support network at the very least.
